CityscopesPhotography Competition

The city can make for fascinating viewing. At times beautiful, ugly, seedy, sublime and ridiculous. Every street, building and person has a story. And this story is best discovered by bicycle.

The city rider’s journey can be as perilous as it is rewarding but we all know those moments when the evening ride home gives you that scintillating feeling. A view across a bridge or down a tree-lined street, the twinkling lights at night or the morning mist lifting. The art of city riding is as visual as it is physical.

Over the next two weeks, we want you to stop (or not) and document the world you encounter whilst riding in the city. It might be the downtown skyline, a man walking his dog, chewing gum stains forming an effigy of Fausto Coppi or a freshly demolished tower block. Whatever the view, if you think it’s worth capturing through a lens, take it. Then submit it to our Cityscopes photography competition. If you perceive it to have visual beauty, or to tell a story, we want to see it.

Simply post your photo on Twitter, Instagram, or Flickr along with the following hashtags:

#cityscopes, your #city or #town, and if you wish, #cycling

We will select a gallery of the best submissions and put them to the public vote. Prizes to be announced. Bonne route!

Don’t you just hate it when you overtake someone, then they turn into a wheel-sucker?!

If you’re so fast mate, why were you soft pedalling?!

To make matters worse, I nearly hit a pedestrian loafing across the road, I started the swing out to pass him, and then he just stopped turning my collision avoidance tack into a head on collision course, only just managed to flick it back inside of him….. Lemming!!

The rain gods are smiling on me!

A beautiful weekend followed by two nights of heavy rain, and yet dry, blue sky riding to work. A bit of surface spray, but dry cleats none the less!

Nice!

Has anyone been watching the Giro?? I’ve hardly seen any of it this year

Mark Cavendish gets his second stage victory in the 2012 Giro d'Italia

Giro d’Italia: Mark Cavendish wins stage five in sprint finish

World road race champion Mark Cavendish won the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia in Fano.

Team Sky delivered the Briton expertly in the sprint as he claimed his second stage victory of the race.

He had the perfect run-in with 500m to go, beating Australian Matt Goss and Italian Daniele Bennati into second and third place.

Cavendish is in fifth position overall, with Ramunas Navardauskas still leading.

The Lithuanian is five seconds ahead of Garmin team-mate Robbie Hunter, with Cavendish 14 seconds off the lead in fifth and colleague Geraint Thomas a further two seconds adrift in sixth.

Cavendish attacked late in the 209km stage from Modena to claim his 32nd stage win in a major tour – and ninth in the Giro – just three days after he crashed during the sprint finish to the third stage.

“I didn’t feel great, I haven’t slept properly since [crashing on] Monday,” Cavendish said, “but I still have a job to do.

“We were able to commit all our guys at the end and we took the race up with 10km to go and it was textbook work from the team.

“I got a perfect leadout but I spent a lot of time changing gears in the last 600m because it wasn’t such a fast sprint.”

However, Cavendish conceded that his chances of wearing the race leaders’ pink jersey, or winning the red points jersey were gone.

“I lost out on 20 points because of the crash on [Monday's] stage to Horsens and so it’s gone,” he said.

“I’m disappointed but I’ll come back and try to get it next year.

Goss added: “Right now Cavendish is impossible to beat.

“We started accelerating at the same time and he just rode away.”

The sixth stage takes the riders 210km from Urbino to Porto Sant’Elpidio, with four medium-category climbs, while the Giro ends in Milan on 27 May.
