The word is getting around! :)

Local people in Trafford are recycling more of their rubbish than anywhere else in Greater Manchester.

Our recycling rate smashed Government targets by soaring to 44 per cent in 2009/10.

Furthermore, these impressive efforts have earned taxpayers £1 million savings on what was paid sending rubbish to landfill.

We’ve also won a national award celebrating our dedication to creating a cleaner, greener Borough – proving that Trafford really is leading the way when it comes to protecting the environment.

Executive Councillor John Reilly said: “I am delighted that the hard work carried out by the Council and supported by residents is paying off.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has got on board the new kerbside recycling service, which is operated by our contractor, Veolia Environmental Services and has had a big impact on our success.

I am sure that our recycling rate will continue to rise and look forward to working with local people and other organisations to protect our environment for future generations.”

Ian Williams, Veolia Environmental Services’ Municipal Director, added: “Working together with the Council, the roll-out of the new recycling service has been exemplary and our operatives are proud to be part of Trafford’s recycling success story.”

The success of the Council’s kerbside recycling service has earned us The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association Can Do Award 2010, for promoting the recycling of aerosols in our recycling and refuse service.

The Council was also commended in this year’s Government Business Awards’ waste management category, and were named runners up in two categories of The Plant and Waste Recycling Awards (Local Authority of the Year, Recycling Awareness Campaign of the Year).

We’re now waiting to hear how we have fared after being shortlisted for a National Recycling Award, in the Local Authority Target Success category.

Dave Spikey backs Trafford’s recycling

Residents in Trafford will be getting information about making sure they are recycling properly later this month.

The Greater Manchester wide scheme, backed by comedian Dave Spikey, is urging people to make sure their waste goes into the right bin, and does not cause contamination meaning the materials can’t be recycled.

Although residents are able to recycle their plastic bottles by putting them in their black bins, Trafford Council’s bin crews have found everything from children’s plastic toys to hose pipes and plastic kitchen colanders placed in residents’ recycling bins.

Smaller materials such as plastic bags, yoghurt pots, plastic trays and wrappings from newspapers and magazine also cause problems if placed in the black recycling bins. These items cannot be recycled as very few companies are able to turn them into new products.

Executive Councillor John Reilly said: “It’s vital that the correct bins are used when recycling, and it is also equally important that the correct type of items are put in these bins especially where plastics are concerned, to avoid contamination. Plastic bottles only can be put into the black bin, and anything else could lead to the bin may not being emptied.

“However those plastic bottles that you find in the kitchen, the bathroom and under the sink, such as washing up liquid, squash and bleach bottles, can be recycled and turned into items such as car bumpers and garden furniture, rather than being sent to landfill.”

Any other type of plastic, such as plastic bags, food trays, yoghurt pots, plastic film, and plant pots, cannot be recycled and should be placed in the grey rubbish bin – as well as items like children’s toys, unless they are in a good enough condition to reuse or send to a charity shop.

All glass, cans, tins, plastic bottles and foil should be placed in the black bin, while paper, cardboard, food and drinks cartons should be placed in the blue bin.

As part of the campaign residents are in with the chance of being a lucky instant  winner of £100, simply by visiting the Recycle for Greater Manchester website and entering their ‘code’ printed in the information pack. By entering the prize draw residents can also be in with a chance of winning £500 worth of high street shopping vouchers.

Remember to watch out for your pack in January and visit www.recycleforgreatermanchester.com to find our more or visit www.trafford.gov.uk for more details about your local recycling service.

We got a new Household Waste Recycling Centre!

RESIDENTS in Trafford can now benefit from a new modern recycling facility to replace their old services.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Sinderland Road has had work done on it since early 2009.

The old facilities are now shut and have been replaced by a new building which hopes to make it “easier for residents to segregate and recycle more of their waste in a simple to use and safe  environment.”

The HWRC has designed the new building to allow for 60 per cent recycling of household waste and increase performance by providing a “wider range of segregated recycling containers so users can  recycle more household items more often.”

Councillor Michael Young, the Vice Chair of Greater Manchesters Waste Disposal Authority, who helped open the new site said the redevelopment was part of a “long-term recycling and waste management  contract to provide world class waste facilities across Greater Manchester.”

Bathroom renovations and recycling…

Ok,
So with a deadline sometime in June for our pending arrival, jobs around the house have taken something of a precedent, leaving the only time for two wheels being the time to get to and from work! :(

Ah well, it’s a job I’ve been putting off for quite some time, and one which ultimately be pleasing to have ticked off the rather extensive “jobs to do list”!

It has made me think though about this throw away culture that we live in…. I ripped the room back to its bare brick, and whenever i do jobs like this, at the fore front of my mind is the essence of trying to re-use anything that i can. So the bath, for example, got a momentary new lease of life as a beer cooler! :)

Seriously though, the door arrangement was heath-robinson, i guess originall the bathroom didn’t have a toilet in it, as there is another one downstairs, but someone had squeezed one in with a full size bath and a washbasin, leaving no room for an in swinging door….. Rubbish!

Being as my Dad had just turned his bathroom and toilet into one room, he had a spare (small) door spare, of the same period as the house, which when dipped and stripped of its paint, looked fantastic, restoring some of the character of the house. OR, i could have just gone and bought an MDF one from the local hardware store and cut it down…. With a bit of thought, and a little recycling, the world is a better place and so is my bathroom….. Well, it will be when it’s finished!

It’s probably a good job I’ve  not been out mountain biking, I’ve been bathing over the kitchen sink for the last week, whilst the shower/bath is out of action! Not an ideal scenario if you walk through the door dripping in mud, which is par for the course at this time of year!

Anyway, hopefully in the coming weeks i’ll get back out on the bike and have something to write about, other than DIY and recycling, though it was a tenuous link at best!!

Recycling & Cycling, a fair mix!

Just thinking on my post last Sunday, and looking back over everything i’ve written, there is quite a distinct bias to all things bicycle!

I will strive to write a little more on the subject of recycling!
