Words from the WD40 team site:
The whirlwind year of rising Warrington cyclist star Matt Gibson has hit a new high after being selected to represent Great Britain for the World Championships.
The 17-year-old from Lymm will rub shoulders with Tour De France winners Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins and sprint king Mark Cavendish as part of Team GB for the week-long global event which starts in Toscana, Italy on Monday September 22.
It promises to be a hectic week for Velocity WD-40 rider Gibson, who will ride in the Junior Men’s Road Race and the Junior Men’s Time Trial.
“It’s going to be a huge honour to be part of the British squad,” said Gibson.
“People like Sir Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish are people I’ve always looked up to, and still do, so to be on the same team of them is a real privilege.
“It’s going to be tough because all the top junior riders from around the world will be there.
“But it’s going to be a great challenge and one I can’t wait to start.”
It will be the second time that Gibson has represented Great Britain in the space of two months after the youngster was selected as part of Team GB for the UCI Junior World Track Championships in Glasgow.
Aided by a personal best, Gibson finished fourth in the 3km individual pursuit and eighth in the Madison.
Gibson struck double gold in the National Junior Track Championships, claiming gold in the junior men’s kilo and 3km individual pursuit.
“Competing in those two events was a great experience and should hold me in good stead for Italy,” he added.
Gibson is part of the nine-strong Velocity WD-40 team made up of some of the strongest youth/junior riders in the UK.
Amy Briggs, of sponsors WD-40, said: “It’s fantastic to see Matt being selected for one of the most prestigious dates on the cycling calendar.
“We are committed to youth/junior cycling at WD-40 and are very proud of the achievements of Matt and the rest of the Velocity WD-40 team.”
