Majestic Matt Gibson transferred his excellent recent form onto the global stage to secure brilliant fifth place at the World Road Cycling Championship.
Gibson, the Velocity Team WD-40 rider from Lymm in Warrington, produced an eye-catching display as he represented Team GB in the junior individual time trial in Italy.
The 17-year-old was one of the earlier riders on the Tuscany course, which stretched almost 22km, and his time of 27mins 26secs left him in silver medal position for part of the day.
By the time the final rider had completed the course, Gibson had dropped down to fifth spot, just nine seconds outside of a medal in the 85-rider field.
And that represented a remarkable performance from a rider who is only in his first of two potential years in the international junior ranks.
“I’m delighted with the performance,” said Gibson. “To get a top five finish is a fantastic feeling as I gave it everything.
“I learned how hard I can go which really helps and I’m already looking forward to coming back next year.
“This ride has given me a lot of confidence for the future.”
Gibson has enjoyed a memorable last two months which have seen him a fourth and eighth place finish in the Junior World Track Championship in Glasgow and two gold medals at the National Junior Track Championship.”
He has a further chance to extend that impressive run this weekend when he competes in the Junior Road Race in Tuscany on Saturday, although his main role will be supporting his team mates during the ride.
Amy Briggs, from Velocity sponsors WD-40, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with Matt’s performance.
“For him to make such a big impression on the world stage is testament to the hard work of both Matt and the whole Velocity WD-40 team.”
